The one about having more kids...

Another dip into the questions you asked on my Bloggers Block Post....

Anonymous said... You have six kids, are you done or will you have more? March 10, 2011 2:36 PM

Oh, the infamous MORE KID question. I wish Anonymous would've revealed themselves. Sad.

This is a tough question for me and I've been doing a lot of soul searching about this one lately. I'm going try to be as open as I can and as honest as I can in answering. This may be a long one....

I was one of those girls that started making lists of names for my future children when I was about 10 years old. I always knew I wanted a lot of children. In my family there were 5 kids. The boys were all born fairly close together and then many years later (about 10 to be exact) there is me...the caboose...the last child...the only girl...the baby. By the time I reached 6th grade I was all alone, my siblings had all grown up and moved away and I spent the next years as an only child. I was really lonely. I didn't want that for my future family. I wanted a house full of children, all close together.

First, a little history.

When Jeremiah and I got married we discussed the subject of children and we both decided we wanted "as many as the Lord would give us and as many as we could afford to take care of." At some point we decided that the magic number for us would be 6 to 8 children. I'm not sure how we set that number but it seemed right at the time.

In November of 1999 we had our first child, a girl-Ashlynne, and then nearly 18 months later had our 2nd child, a boy-Brinton. Our son was born with a congenital birth defect which required him to be in and out of the hospital, with several surgeries. During the time I was pregnant with number 3 our son had a major surgery, and subsequent emergency surgery to clear blood clots which had formed and could've been fatal. He spent the next 2 weeks in the PICU. As you can imagine I was emotionally drained, exhausted from the pregnancy, and completely overwhelmed. I had our 3 child, a girl-Elise, when our son was 19 months old. By the time I was 21, I had 3 children! At this point, I had a feeling I was DONE with three, even though something inside said I really wasn't.

When Elise, was nearing 2 years old we felt super strongly that it was time again to have another child. We became pregnant immediately but after 12 weeks the pregnancy ended. Our hearts were broken and we wondered if maybe we weren't ready for another baby yet. Even though we had felt so strongly about it we began second guessing ourselves. We decided to let nature take its course and just let whatever was going to happen, happen. 3 months later we were pregnant again and 2 months before Elise's 3rd birthday we gave birth to our 4th child, a girl-Julianna, who was our first home birth. We were happy, our family was happy, we felt done in the sense that it couldn't get any better.

Then 2 and a half years after that we were completely surprised and blessed with our 5th child, Liam, who was also born at home.

2 and a half years after that we were blessed with our 6th child, Aidan-born at home, who is now 6 months old.

So that should bring you up to speed.....now back to the question, "You have six kids, are you done or will you have more?"

Before having Aidan the answer would've been, we'll probably have more. Immediately after having Aidan the answer was a definite we're done! (To which Jeremiah would say, "Stop saying we're done, I don't think we are)

When we had Aidan it was a highly stressful time. The day after he was born Jeremiah had to leave on a mandatory business trip, leaving me alone with a brand new baby and 5 older kids. It was unavoidable, it was horrible. To add to the stress we moved 2 hours away when Aidan was 6 days old. Due to the fact that Jeremiah was gone in Louisiana, when Aidan was only 3 days old I was driving back and forth between our old home and our new home making moving arrangements and delivering odds and ends. The next 3 months was pure hell. Jeremiah was gone more than half of the time on business, only returning on weekends. I was unpacking a new home, a new mom of 6, driving back and forth to Olathe once a week. Managing the kids schedules... From the second I had Aidan I never stopped! Add to that, Aidan was the fussiest baby I'd ever had, my milk was not coming in properly, I was going nuts....I was DONE having kids. Six had officially put me over my limit. I just didn't think I could ever handle one more child, I barely knew how I was handling the ones I already had.

So here we are now. 6 months later. Am I done?
For a season.

Jeremiah and I have been really talking about this lately, pondering what we should do. Are we done? Do we want to close that door and just raise the 6 beautiful children we've been blessed with? I think that for right now it's still to soon to tell. FOR. RIGHT. NOW. I feel done. However, I'm not opposed to having more. I think that there may be a couple more little ones for us, BUT now is not the time. Next year probably isn't right either. The year after that?! I don't know. But maybe we'll revisit the discussion when Aidan is 3, Liam is in Kindergarten and I'm ready to breathe again....or not....by then I'll have teenagers and maybe I won't want to do the newborn thing again. I guess what I'm trying to say is I'm going to leave this in the Lord's hands. When and if it's time again He'll let me know. Maybe that sounds like such an easy, simple, even naive answer BUT I fully believe in personal revelation and I know that if it's time to have another baby I will know....or he'll surprise us.

Random Picture Week: Day 4

This picture was taken last summer at the St. Louis, MO Temple. It was an awesome trip because Jeremiah and I were able to attend the temple, which was located roughly 4 hours away from our home in Olathe, while the youth from our church watched our kids at a nearby chapel. When we were done we went to pick up our kids, changed our clothes, and then took them back over to the temple grounds for a walk and picnic lunch (yummy $2 taco bell meals).

I love everything that is going on in this picture. Ashlynne and Brinton are grinning ear to ear (can you say Cheese?) waiting for the picture to be taken. Elise is too distracted by the sun/wind in her eyes to stay focused on the camera and she can't keep her hands out of her face. Liam is looking at me to see what I'm doing and there I am, a very pregnant mommy in action, helping Julianna stay modest and keep her skirt from flying in her face. I love pictures that show me being a mommy...like really actively doing some type of motherly thing. Silly but sometimes I forget until I see it in pictures...

P.S. I guess you can't tell BUT I was 7 months pregnant in this picture.

Random Picture Week: Day 3

In September 2009, I spent my 28th birthday with Jeremiah, Julianna and Liam in New Orleans, LA. Jeremiah was on a business trip for the week and so he took us along with him. The big kids were in school so they had to miss the trip. Jeremiah had to work everyday and could only spend evenings with us--so I was pretty much left to fend for myself and have fun in the Big Easy with my two kiddos. I got really good at getting around using their trolley car system with two small kids, a diaper bag, and a stroller.....anyway back to the picture...

The day after my birthday I got passes for us to go to the new Audubon Nature Institute also known as the Insectarium. It's the bug museum. We saw every kind of bug possible....and then I ate one....in a cookie! EW! Actually I couldn't even really taste it once I ate it. Every time I went to bite into it I'd squeal so I stood there freaking out about eating it for like 3 minutes before I finally bit into it. LOL! If you look closely you'll see brown things that look like chocolate chips, those are meal worms. Yay for me! I eat bugs. After I took the inaugural bite of this cookie I ate a few more, then I tried this southwest chip dip with crickets in it and it was so, so, so delicious. Except I had gritty little cricket legs in my teeth for awhile after.

P.S. I look so sweaty because it was September in New Orleans and OH.MY.GOODNESS. it was hot and sticky and gross and humid AND I got off the wrong trolley exit and walked like 3 blocks to get to the Insectarium. BLECH!

Random Picture Week: Day 2

At first I chose a completely different pic for today's Random Picture BUT...After dinner tonight Elise, age 8, my adorable free spirit of a child sat down at the computer to play for a few minutes. My kids really enjoy the PAINT program and are always "drawing" pictures in it. They are all quite creative and I love looking at what their little imagination come up with. Tonight, after sitting for several minutes Elise was so excited and kept jumping up and down asking me to look at what she made on the computer. I was trying to clean up the dinner dishes and attend to the baby so initially I brushed her off. She pleaded with me to just take a quick look at her picture and I gave in. It made me smile from ear to ear to see this:

She had a rough evening and got her little finger slammed in the piano lid but still Life could not be better! :) My daughter is a glass half full kind of gal, she is ever the optimist but she tends to be incredibly emotional. She feels every emotion with every cell in her body. She is the happiest child when she is happy and the saddest when she is sad. It warmed my heart that despite the sadness she felt before dinner she still thought that Life could not be better.

The words "Life could not be better" are part of a song from a movie the kids like to watch called "Liken the Scriptures:Nephi and Laban" Part of the chorus says:

"Life could not be better,
cause I choose the right down to the letter..."

Maybe that's why she drew herself running through a field of green with a big smile on her face?!

Random Picture Week: Day 1

The last couple of weeks have been super busy for me. I thought I was having blogger's block but I realize that LIFE was just getting in the way of my creativity! Blogging is a creative outlet for me and being so extremely busy every day was actually hindering my ability to write and all I could feel was exhaustion....creativity was no where to be found. Now that life has calmed back down I'm able to sit back, reflect on my day, and feel like I can actually write about it again.

In my last blog post, the one about blogger's block, I told you guys to help me out of my funk and I got a lot of response. So for the next while I'm going to use your ideas and questions as a spring board for each of my blog posts. :)

First up:

one of my friends is picking random pictures and blogging about the story behind each one. one pic per post.

I love this idea so I declare this week RANDOM PICTURE WEEK

Ever wonder what I looked like as a baby?? The above picture was taken 29 years, 6 months, and 7 days ago. There really isn't a story to this picture other than I came into the world with a big mouth, a strongwill and a fighting spirit. This picture also stands as a reminder that I was born nearly 30 years ago...30. Years!

In 6 months I'm going to be 30.

Wow. 30. I'm gonna go cry in a corner....I'll be back tomorrow.

Blogger's Block...

I'm suffering a severe case of Blogger's block. I have no idea what to write about, no inspiration. It all seems dullllllll and boring and the same ole, same ole my life is crazy business. Blargh.

So i decided to ask....What do YOU want me to write about? Anything, anything at all. Your wish is my command (within reason). Ask me a question, what do you want to know? Or give me a topic to write about...you can leave it right down there in the comments. Depending on the response I'll try and answer a question a day. If you're a lurker (I KNOW YOU'RE THERE) now might be a fun time to "out" yourself. ;)

Come on, help a friend out.

Please.

P.S. I'm moderating comments on this one so if you don't want me to post it but still want to ask me something go ahead and let me know :)
