Home Interior Trouble Spots...

Couldn't sleep last night woke up at 4am and didn't really get back to sleep. My brain was racing with crafty ideas of how to spruce up my home and add some color. But I need some help...I am still finding my own when it comes to "interior decorating." I have a couple dilemas and would like to hear your opinions on how I could solve them...also if you have any really good crafty websites let me know!!!!!

1. In my family room there is a large opening into the den. There is a pony wall that seperates the den from the family room and we have our black couch up against it. However, the office tends to get a little messy with all the plans and designs Jeremiah has and I would like to find a way to cover up the opening so that you can't see into the den. I have thought about using a curtain of some kind...Jeremiah wants to build a shelf unit (which would look great I bet) but he doesn't have the time or the energy to do so and I'm looking for more of a quick fix...any suggestions?

2. What do you with those "media niches" that aren't being used for media?! We have one above our fireplace and I'm not gonna put a TV in it...so what can I do with it...I don't like it being this big empty hole in the wall....Comments? Thoughts? Ideas?

3. sliding glass door to the patio has vertical blinds which I don't intend on removing but I don't think they look great. Can I put a curtain of some sort or would that look out of place? Maybe just a valance?! Anyone?!

Please please help me out. I turn to you because I know you are all incredibly smart fun and crafty in your own way and I know that you can offer great suggestions. PLEASE COMMENT!!! I have a whole day tomorrow to start working on projects!

ummm.... you think that I can help you with that stuff?!?!? I suck at decorating!!!!! I know when something looks good, but I'm not creative enough to come up with my own ideas.

The only suggestion I have is for the media box. You need to create a shrine to the saint of your choice. That is what I think is the best option.

That or you could put a big flowery plant in there, we did that once at a house I lived in with one of those. Or maybe install a shelf in there and use it like a small bookcase???

I don't know... I told you I'm dumb.

Soooo...here are my thoughts on your decorating question.

1- Have you thought of using a collapsible screen? You can do ALL sorts of things to them, and you can find them in fun colors and shapes as well.

2- What about a nice flower arrangement? Even if it's with fake flowers, it will fill up the space without looking too gawdy or tacky.

3- Valances can be nice, but just make sure you don't overdo it, or it could look horrible.

My fave website for designing things on my own is bhg.com (they have excellent do-it-yourself instructions!).

You should use an asian screen for a room divider/blocker. You can buy ones that you put pictures of the kids in or you can make your own pretty easily.

Well, I don't know if it's an easy fix. But if you have the moolah, Alot of the model homes we were looking at had Shutters in the pony wall office/family room area, which was nice becuase you can still open them if kids are using the computer for supervision purposes, but close them off when company comes over.

And about your sliding door. I HATE virtical blinds, they sun fade and are always falling off their clicky thing to hold them up. So I hung curtains with a long curtain rod over the whole window. My plan is to sew black out material behind my ideal patterned material, but for now, it's just a beige match-all material. I love it so much more than blinds.

I'm not an interior decorator, but there are certain things I don't care for in my home, and that's one of them. Kids just ruin blinds so fast. We splurged for the wood blinds so the kids weren't ruining them in their own windows.

anywho, good luck, and happy crafting!!!

Hey Alida!! My first comment on your fantastic blog!!! =]
I love decor so here are some some of my thoughts... =]
The opening into the den: maybe those cute lil beaded curtain thingys or something of that sort... they're really cute... I've seen them in Target and Bed Bath and Beyond. As far as the media area, maybe get some nice frames and/or a great floral arrangement or even a word plaque like FAMILY or what not and display some of your favorite pics, scrapbook pages, etc. Try stores like Bed Bath & Beyond, Linens & Things, Target, Walmart, Michaels for the frames.... as the vertical blinds area, try Walmart, Target, or even Annas Linens for a cute lil valance. They always have cute patterns. If you decide to put curtains, I would consider removing the blinds.... You don't need curtains, it'll just something up top to make it pop.
