Traveling the world at the Ethnic Festival

Every year for the last 35 years they've held an Ethnic Enrichment festival in Kansas City. Countries from all over the world are represented and you can get every type of food imaginable. There is a large stage where performers from different countries dance, sing and perform. I wish I had known about this 4 years ago when we first moved here! We've really been missing out.

Saturday was the perfect day to go, the skies were a little overcast and the weather was absolutely beautiful. Since it didn't look like I was going to be having the baby yesterday we figured it was safe to go...not to mention that just maybe all the walking might just put me into labor!

When we entered the gate each of the kids was given a little passport and as we went to each booth they were able to get a stamp from each country. They were so excited running to each country for their stamp!

We spent the first half hour or so watching the Irish dancers. The Chinese dancers were up right afterward but by then we were hungry and ready to eat some food.

We made sure that no one ate any lunch before we went so we all had big appetites. We had food, desserts and drinks from Ecuador, Bolivia, Samoa, Nepal, Phillipines, Israel, Gambia, Thailand, Brazil and probably a couple others that I've forgotten.

In photo order (because for some reason I can't individually caption them): #1. Empanadas from Ecuador, #2. Fresh Mango Drink from Nepal (kind of like a smoothie but 100% pulpy and real mango) and in the bowl in my hand (although you can't see it) Teriyaki Chicken and Rice from Samoa, #3 Falafel, Hummus and Pita, Pickles and some salad-y stuff from Israel, #4 Churisquino, Rice, and tomato onion salad-y stuff from Brazil, #5 Aidan drinking the rest of my mango drink from Nepal, #6 My very most favorite dessert from the Philippines (my hubby served a mission there) called  Halo-Halo.  It was perfect!  #7 Pansit and Rice from the Philippines which Aidan ate most of....

Also not shown was an empanada type thing from Bolivia that Julianna wanted but then didn't like (more food for Jeremiah!), the most amazing pina colada type drink from Gambia, and this really yummy Guarana soda from Brazil.  I'm sure there was other stuff....I can't remember....too busy eating.

In Thailand...well not *in* Thailand but at the Thailand booth they cut open young coconuts for us and we drank the coconut water and then ate the coconut insides.  It's different from coconut that we are used to because the coconut is more like jelly in consistency.  Julianna was a little wary at first but really enjoyed it.  Liam however was not convinced and he spit it all out.  I'm glad that at least he tried it.

They had a booth set up where the kids could get their hair spray painted for free. I don't really love the look but it made them happy so....

There were little places for great photo ops....

We walked around for over 5hours and not so much as one little contraction. I got a little Mehndi design painted on my foot by a sweet older Indian woman as a "good luck" in labor. They supposedly last about 1-3 weeks so it'll likely still be there when I finally give birth.

Overall it was a super fun day and I can't wait to go back next year!
I'm glad I didn't spend my day watching the clock and waiting for something to happen because I really would've missed out on a good time!

That looks like so much fun! We would love to go to something like that. I love the kids' hair too. I'll bet they enjoyed that. :)
