How does your garden grow?

We spent the last 8 years in Vegas where generally people don't have gardens in their backyard. It's too hot, the soil is awful and I think some people are much too busy for that sort of thing. This year we thought we'd try our hand at a little gardening...you know since we are "country folk" now.

Pondering...Why does everyone seem to be playing while I'm planting??

Our new home backs up to a foresty creek and thus our "backyard" consists of two large decks overlooking the creek and two smaller side yards. Do to this our yard doesn't really lend itself to a typical row garden. It's such a narrow side yard (with really ugly bushes that I don't yet have the money or time to get rid of) that we decided to build narrow, raised beds and section them off square foot style. We built 2 long boxes which are easily accessible from the front gate and planted tomatoes, spinach, red & green peppers, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, eggplant, zucchini and strawberry plant. Each of the kids have been given a section to work. Ashlynne has the 2 tomatoes, 2 peppers and 4 cauliflower. Brinton has the 4 broccoli and 6 spinach plants. Julianna has the onions and Elise is in charge of the strawberry. Their job is to water and love their section of the garden twice a day and so far they've been loving and watering for 2 weeks.

I can't wait to see what CROPS up! :)

Alida, I love it. What a great thing you are teaching them by putting them in charge of their own section. Every time I hear more about your home I fall in love with it. It back up onto a 'foresty creek'!?! How beautiful.

I'm so jealous! I want a garden so bad. Even though I'm pretty sure anything I attempt to grow will die it would still be a fun project and home grown veggies are SOOOOOO good! You're such a cool mommy.
