Getting rid of the General Conference Wiggles....

When my family joined The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints we lived in New York City. Twice a year the church members gather together to receive counsel at a meeting called General Conference. In New York this consisted of dressing up in your Sunday best two days in a row, traveling an hour to our Stake Center and a near all day stay (2 hours for 1st session, 2 hour break, 2 hours for 2nd session) listening to the talks via satellite. Often my father would serve as a Spanish translator and my mother and I would enjoy the conference together while he served. As you can imagine these very long 6 hours were A LOT for a little girl to handle. I wandered alot...getting up to get drinks, taking naps, coloring. I was restless! After 3 years we moved to Utah and general conference became semi blissful. Why? Because you could watch it from the comfort of your own home; broadcast on local TV. Which usually meant I still wandered, took naps, colored, and got up to get drinks...but in the comfort of my own home dressed in my pjs.

After getting married and moving to Las Vegas we still had the privlege of being able to watch the broadcast on television which was a great blessing at times. Now with the internet, satellite tv, and all that modern technology has to offer us most people around the world can also enjoy General Conference from the comfort of their homes as well. Hooray for modern technology!

Here in Kansas I was kind of hoping that we would have to go to the stake center and have the kids get a little taste of what I had to endure when I was younger. Maybe endure is the wrong word but I was definately thinking that maybe there would be more reverance when forced to actually GO to general conference as opposed to turning on the tv. However, we are fortunate to have the BYU channel and it seems most people will either watch on tv or the internet so I guess we will still be watching it on TV.

Since we'll be staying home I have been trying to find things to help keep some reverance in my home during conference this weekend and it seems that there have been some answers to my prayers in the form of various blog postings. My friend Lisa found a great general conference activity packet and the girls at Light Refreshments Served (Deseret Books blog) also posted a couple links! I also have been doing some extensive research and have gathered even more links to add!! Hooray for me!

I have decided to make my own conference activity book for my kids using different pages from each of the various sources. I will let you know how they worked out next week.

For now here are links for LDS GENERAL CONFERENCE PACKETS and ACTIVITIES!

Thanks Alida! I love doing things like this. I find that we pay much more attention if we have these awesome little packets, and of course candy, frozen dinners, quick breakfast things and did I mention candy? Enjoy the weekend. I can't wait to hear the voice of the Lord through his apostles! (that means more talk info for us right?)

Thanks! My parents always made us go to the stake center anyway. Those were the days.

PS- I took that post down. I thought it was a little TOO much. I'm glad you thought it was funny though. I couldn't stop laughing.
